"Computer, main console, load Alpha 34- Cohen Alpha 3, authorization Cohen omega three three one." said Peter as he sat back and waited for the computer to finish the simulation load. After a few moments the computer began a lengthy simulation of weapons and power systems. Peter grew suspicious of the numbers Matrix had produced earlier in their project and decided to add a few conservative markers and direct feed measurements from the ship itself. (USS Paladin, Main Engineering, ACEO Ensign Peter Cohen - 1641) Cohen wasn't pleased with the results, but after 3 full simulations he was ready to concede that what Matrix had surmised was based upon inaccurate measurements and the computer's own efficiency in simulation algorithms. The fourth simulation was nearly finished and Peter was getting ready to cancel the output. The computer beeped and the last simulation results appeared on the monitor before him. Peter glanced at the results, anticipating the same results. What appeared Peter wasn't expecting. "Computer, are the results shown on the monitor the final computations for Alpha 34, simulation 39?" The computer beeped an affirmative. "Computer, reload simulation 39 with the same parameters." "This is interesting. The energy efficiency of the plasma and warp conduits are increased by thirteen percent and weapons output by nearly fifty percent. Matrix just might have something here...hummm." said Peter. Eleven minutes passed and the computer again displayed the results of the simulation. Peter eagerly read through the coding and results. "Simulation number fourty, energy efficiency 12 percent, weapons output 48 percent. Computer are the inputs for simulation 40 taken from current ships readings?" The computer displayed "affirmative" on the console. Peter smiled. "Computer load Alpha 34 with run number 40 inputs. A moment later the computer was ready to start another simulation run. Peter then entered some programming changes to the flow matrix, adjusted for some inefficiencies in the analog conversions and threw in some human variables and ran the simulation again. Nine minutes later the computer displayed the results. Peter's jaw dropped. "Wow, the key is in the tertiary warp core and conduit matrix parameters. With some modifications I think we can do this. I've got to tell Matrix about this." Peter busily tapped the computer console and got lost in his tasks for the next hour and a half. Her physical wounds had been superficial for the most part, cuts and bruises, the worst had been a phaser burn. With the fear of the situation in the past, if only by less than an hour, the mental toll was starting to take it's toll. She had been crying silently since they had left her alone. They had provided her with some replicated clothes, and some decent food, then left her to herself in the corner of the structure. They'd left her there for a good 30 minutes, when a third Lieutenant finally told her that she had been cleared to beam up to the Paladin. She was still amazed at the youth of some of the Marines. The officers were all older, but some of the enlisted looked younger than her 20 years. She was escorted to the transporter pad, where she quietly waited for her turn. Elizabeth wasn't normally a shy person, but after the last few weeks, she just couldn't bring herself to talk to anyone. Everyone seemed to be doing something vital all the time. Everyone around her looked tired and worn, no one smiled, and no one laughed. If Elizabeth had to guess, the last good day they all had was the day before the war started. She stepped onto the transporter pad when she was told to, the transporter operator signaled her to standby for a moment, then nodded and tapped a few buttons. The familiar sensation of having her atoms scanned, scrambled, beamed to the Paladin, and reassembled once more. NRPG: I'm leaving her welcoming committee vague at the moment, as the meeting hasn't been concluded by Wes yet, and I don't know who's meeting her (Michael may very well be in the Brig), and where she is going to have to go first. If the arrival time needs to be changed, I will repost. Commander Sarouk, 16:19) Sarouk waited patiently till Matrix had given his report for Engineering, then stood up himself. "While Lt. Matrix has been overseeing the general repairs," Sarouk said in his typical deep emotionless tone. "I've been overseeing the repairs to the primary computer core. Repairs are still underway and I estimate will be completely finished in another 12.365 hours. Until then you may experience delays when accessing the library computer. All primary systems are currently running on the secondary computer core. I would also like to request at this time to conduct more extensive upgrades to the Paladin primary LCARS. Prior to the 52nd pulling away from the rest of the fleet, Star Fleet Command released an up grade for the primary operating system. I was one of the computer engineers involved in the development of the upgrade and am fully qualified to implement the up grade. I have submitted an overview of what areas this up grade would cover. I only require command authorization to begin." Sarouk sat back down as he finished speaking. "I'll look over the over view and contact you latter with any question I might have Commander," Eva replied before moving on to the next report. "We have just come through a very difficult mission," She said, rising from her seat. "It has been trying both physically and emotionally. This ship and her crew have, as usual, performed their duties with courage and honor. Let us never forget those who have laid down their lives this day fighting for the freedom of the Federation." She paused, lowering her head in a show of respect to the fallen. After a few second she lifted her head and looked around the room. "Ensign Whetari, front and center," Eva said sharply. She turned to face the Ensign as she came to attention in front her. "In recognition of your commitment to this ship, her crew, and the people of the United Federation of Planets I hereby promote to you full Ensign with all the responsibilities and privileges of said rank. Furthermore, in light of Lt. Keller's injuries, I hereby name you Chief Medical Officer of the USS Paladin. Congratulations." Eva took a moment to remove the Ensign old black pip and replacing it with a gold one before offering the Ensign her hand. (Reply Whetari) "Lt Matrix front and center," Eva said next, turning to look at Matrix. She waited till the Lt had snapped to attention in front of her. "In recognition of your continued commitment to this ship, her crew, and the people of the United Federation of Planets I hereby promote you to full Lieutenant. Congratulations." Eva removed the black pip from Matrix's collar and replaced it with a new gold one. (Reply Matrix) "Furthermore," Eva continued, "In light of our next missions parameters. I hereby name you Chief Engineering Officer of the USS Paladin." She turned to look at Commander Sarouk. "Commander, while your performance as CEO has been exemplary, your unique skills will be needed in another capacity which I will address shortly." Sarouk simply inclined his head in acknowledgment, his expression never changing (Reply Matrix) Remaining standing, Eva waited until everyone had retaken their seats before continuing. "Now for our next mission," She began, looking around at her officers. "After a long discussion with Admiral Lee, the decision has been made to move the 1st Battle Group off the front lines of this offensive. The combined Federation and Klingon fleet has pushed deep into enemy occupied territory and are closing in on Earth. However, the war is not yet won, and we must remain vigilant against foreign threats while combating this domestic threat. The 1st Battle Group has been ordered to proceed with all due haste to sector 426 and take up routine patrol along the Romulan Neutral Zone. Fleet command has received reports of increased activity on the Romulan side of the zone. Fleet Command hopes that our presence will deter the Romulans from attempting to take advantage of the current civil-war and try to encroach on Federation territory. Our presence should convince the Romulan's that we are willing and able to defend Federation colonies along the Neutral Zone. However, I want this ship and her crew ready for anything. We can not afford to start another armed conflict so we will need to proceed carefully to ensure the security of the Federation. It will take us at least 4 days at high warp to reach our new patrol sector, I want everyone to use that time wisely so that we are rested and ready when to begin our patrol. If there are no questions, you are all dismissed." She thought once more of those that were no longer with them. "It is my hope that this war will soon be over and we can return to being explorers and keepers of the peace. With that in mind, I have decided to begin preparing for that time. Lt. Commander Sarouk I have chosen you to head up our new Advanced Theoretical Technologies department. Your department will consist of a number of engineering experts that will work with both the Science and Engineering departments on researching and integrating new technologies with current Federation technologies. As Matrix headed toward the turbo lift behind Alura he smiled. They entered the turbo lift and turned around to face the door, Alura still in front of him. "Deck 17," said Matrix. Right now I think Ensign O'Connor has something to tell us. Don't you Ensign." "Yes sir," Michael said after taking a deep breath. "At roughly 0100 hours yesterday, I returned to my quarters to find a isoliner chip sitting on my terminal," Michael said, keeping it as clinical as he could. "Not knowing the source of the chip, I isolated my terminal from the main computer system, and scanned for any viruses, not finding any I accessed the data on the chip. A video image played, it was a ransom message and blackmail of sort. Doenitz loyal forces had captured my sister, Elizabeth. They threatened to kill her unless I released the virus aboard the Paladin, and to prove their point, they shot my sister in the leg. Who ever broke into my quarters had full access to the computer system, as they managed to erase all trace of their being in my quarters. As soon as the message played the chip fully erased itself, leaving no trace of data. I spent the night trying to find some slip so I could track down whoever left the message, but I couldn't find anything. At 0900 hours, another message was delivered to Ensign Knightly in the Ops office for me. She promptly brought the chip to me on the bridge. When I went to my office to watch it, it was another message from the same masked people, telling me again that I was to comply or else my Sister would be killed. It was apparent that they were watching me, and they there was at least one Enemy spy on the ship." Michael said. Taking a deep breath he finally looked up at the Captain. "Captain, I am sorry that I didn't tell you, I just couldn't risk it if they did actually have my sister, I needed to handle it on my own. At no point was I going to release the virus onto the ship, I made sure the Engineering took extra precautions with the containment units for Cargobay 3, and during the battle, when I couldn't guarantee the containment of the cargobay, I vented the entire area into space. Sir, I know that none of that redeems my not telling you about the messages, but I simply couldn't risk my sisters life." He slid the PADD he had been working on across the table to the Captain. "Sir, on the PADD is my confession to all of this, as well as a letter of resignation. Now that my sister is safe, I will accept any punishment that you deem necessary." Michael said, collapsing back into his chair, relieved to finally have everything off his chest. Matrix took a few moments to input a meeting request on Peter's and Alura's schedule. He added a private note on Alura's calendar. 'We never finished that dinner date, perhaps we can try again?' Matrix smiled and closed his calendar screen and got up from his desk. Matrix undressed and prepared to take a shower. He wanted to get cleaned up, grab some food and review for tomorrow's meeting. He also wanted to prepare to take the reins as Chief in engineering. He still hadn't met with Commander Sarouk, but it appeared the Commander was going to be onboard just in a different role. Matrix smiled with pride at the second gold pip on his collar. Many thoughts were popping into his head as the story was being told. Once Ensign O'Conner was finished Calvin spoke to the Captain and O'Conner. "The intruder may still be on board. I will get with security and see what we can do." Calvin paused and gulped. A look on his face said disappointed, and angry. "Captain, I believe we should accept his resignation." He looked at Michael. "You have been a fine officer, but this is not acceptable." She'd been right, she hadn't like what he had to say, not one bit. She held the PADD containing his confession and resignation in one hand, her eyes only briefly leaving O'Connor to regard the contents of the PADD before moving back to O'Connor. "The intruder may still be on board. I will get with security and see what we can do." Commander Capps said then paused before continuing. "Captain, I believe we should accept his resignation." He looked at Michael. "You have been a fine officer, but this is not acceptable." "Not an intruder, Number One," Eva said, her voice as cold as space. Her glare never leaving O'Connor. "A mole. The person who did this is a member of this crew, and someone with exceptional computer skills at that. Ensign, at any time did you consider informing either myself or Commander Capps of this situation?" (Reply O'Connor) Eva was silent for several moments, tapping the PADD with O'Connor's resignation with one finger, as her burning glare laid squarely on O'Connor. Slowly a plan started to form in her mind, they had a mole on board, one that had not revealed themselves and had taken great pains to cover their tracks. Ensign O'Connor was their only lead on finding this mole, hopefully before they managed to destroy the ship or kill anyone. The plan forming in her mind was risky, but it was their best bet to draw the mole out into the light where they might be captured. "No, Ensign," Eva said, flipping the PADD and placing it face down on the table in front of her. "I believe you DID attempt to let the virus lose on the ship, or so the computer will show once repairs have been completed." She turned to look at Commander Capps. "I want you to have a private discussion with Commander Sarouk and make sure that evidence is indeed present. During the battle Ensign O'Connor attempted to compromise the containment units on Cargo Bay 3, thereby releasing the virus into the primary life support system, but through user error or equipment malfunction ended up venting the cargo bay to open space. Equipment malfunction I believe would be more believable." She turned her gaze back to O'Connor. "Once the computer is fully repaired, you will discover this evidence and attempt to erase it or alter it before it is discovered, thereby adding credibility to it. Hopefully our mole will be watching. "Like it or not, you are our only lead on drawing this mole out. They attempted to use you once before, if they believe you indeed tried to carry out what they ordered they very well may attempt to use you again. Either that or they will attempt to kill your sister, considering she is now on board. I find it highly unlikely that Commander Sarouk is our mole. First because his family lives on board including his infant daughter. Second, he would not have needed to recruit you to compromise the containment units. As Chief Engineer he could of easily done so himself with little chance of being caught. I will talk with Lt. Kerge and see to it that both you and your sister are monitored at all times, very discreetly. As a Klingon this type of thing would go against his sense of honor, so I think it is safe to say he is not our mole either. No one else is to know of this, NO one. The less that know the better chance we will have of drawing this mole out. You simply wanted to meet with the Commander and myself at this time to discuss bringing your sister on board for a period of time. As she is a civilian, her presence on a star ship during war time is highly unusual and would require special dispensation form the command staff, so that will not be unusual. Do you understand what you are to do Ensign? (Reply O'Connor) "I will keep this," She continued, tapping the PADD with O'Connor's confession and resignation with one finger, "in a safe place for now. Do as I've ordered and it will be forgotten. Disobey me, or compromise the safety of this ship or crew again in any fashion and I will see to it that you are tried under the Articles of War as a traitor. Is that clear?" (Reply O'Connor) "Then you are dismissed. This conversation never took place," She said, rising from her seat, tucking the PADD neatly under her arm. Four more hours passed with Matrix programming and reprogramming more trials, waiting for their results, testing and retesting. "Computer, Chief Engineer's log. Alpha 34 testing has been largely successful and very promising. As of this stardate we've run 72 simulations with various parameters, many from direct input from current ships status.
